Atticus Rominger from REV Birmingham speaks to Club

This morning Atticus Rominger spoke to the Vestavia Sunrise Rotary Club about the incredible revitalization taking place in Downtown, Avondale, and Woodlawn.  Birmingham is considered an up an coming city due to all the progress.  Some of the projects included Wayfinding Signage, Parkside District Development, Birmingham Lights, and Birmingham BIKESHARE.  Housing developments have driven downtown residents to around 8,000 people and based on current projects it will soon be 10 - 12,000.

Their website is www.rebirmingham.org and there is a great deal more information.  Thanks to Atticus for coming to visit our club!

New Officers Inducted

The Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary is a new and young club.  Since starting in 2011, the club has grown to over 30 members.  More importantly, the club carries out several big service projects a year including helping less fortunate in central Alabama through the Spirit of Luke Foundation and supporting our policemen and firemen at our signature event, First Responder's Celebration.

Our biggest goal is to grow in service over the next year.
— Troy Hendrixson, VHSR President

This past week we inducted new officers to help carry on the tradition and further our growth.  What makes our club uniquely positioned to make a difference is the mix of energetic youth and wise leaders.  We have rotarians who have been in at meetings for over thirty years and some less than a few months.  If you are looking for a way to serve locally, nationally or internationally connect with Rotary.  There is a place for you.

2015-16 Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Officers:

  • Troy Hendrixson, President

  • Andy Tunnell, President Elect

  • Greg Hulsey, Secretary

  • Mark Henry, Treasurer

  • John Henley, Membership Chairman

Drugs In Vestavia - Chief Dan Rary

An eye opening presentation this morning by Vestavia Hills Police Chief Rary, Lieutenant Evans, and Sargent Gaston about drugs in Vestavia. Just like a grade school "show & tell", the police department brought samples of cocaine, heroine, meth and more to show us what these drugs look like.

There is a problem with drugs in Vestavia. Given our affluence it may be hard to believe and it is something we must look at. One of the best ways to counter act it is awareness. Thanks to the Vestavia Hills Police Department and all the first responders for keeping us safe and putting their life on the line for us everyday, 24/7.

Sex Appealed - Was the U.S. Supreme Court Fooled? - Judge Janice Law

Judge Janice Law is the author of five books. This morning Judge Law spoke on her recent book "Sex Appealed - Was the U.S. Supreme Court Fooled?" which deals with a major constitutional law criminal case which began in her Houston court and went well all the way to the U. S. Supreme Court.

A funny and interesting speaker, Judge Law shared her experiences as a print journalist, prosecutor and judge about a case that shapes the countries judicial views on sex. After a reading an excerpt from the first chapter of her book, the club engaged in a fascinating conversation. Judge Law kept everyone's attention.

One little known fact about Judge Law is she has spoken to approaching 90 Rotary clubs. It's easy to see why.
